Kingsbridge Armory will get redevelopment redux at State of the City
When Mayor Michael Bloomberg gives his annual State of the City address Thursday -- his 11th as Hizzoner -- he'll put the spotlight on a historic landmark filled with controversy: the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx.
Bloomberg plans to call for proposals from developers to transform the vacant armory complex and create new jobs, according to his office.
Two years ago, the mayor supported a proposal to convert the site, which covers 5 acres on West Kingsbridge Road, into a shopping mall. But the City Council railed against the plan because the developer wouldn't ensure future retail workers would be paid a "living wage" -- $10 an hour.
