Local shopping initiatives encourage New Yorkers to look around the corner for holiday deals
Why make a long-distance trip for that last-minute gift?
Through hyper-local shopping initiatives this holiday season, New Yorkers who live or work in certain communities are being encouraged to also spend in those communities.
“People are looking for one-stop shopping,” said Elizabeth H. Berger, president of the Alliance for Downtown New York. “What we finally have is a critical mass of retailers and restaurateurs to supply every need at every price point.”
Berger’s group has spent more than $340,000 to draw attention to about 1,000 businesses in lower Manhattan this year, arranging promotions and even creating itineraries for time-strapped shoppers. The effort is also aimed at the many tourists who visit the area.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz similarly is hoping to keep business in his borough. Retailers can offer a “Brooklyn Bonus” discount through his Shop Brooklyn program.
Further north, Queens residents can find deals through the borough’s Shop Queens Shop the World initiative.
And it’s never a bad thing to help out your neighbors, said Jack Abraham, founder and CEO of Milo.com, a Web database that allows users to search for goods at stores near them. Spending locally helps to create and preserve jobs locally, he said.
“It supports your local government as well,” Abraham said. “The tax revenue stays at the local level and it can be reinvested into schools, reinvested in social programs.”
