Major Bronx street gets faster bus service
The MTA rolled out a Select Bus Service route on Webster Avenuein the Bronx on Monday.
The new route, which was open to riders Sunday , will take riders from East Gun Hill Road in the Williamsbridge area down to East 149th Street and Third Avenue in the South Bronx in less than 40 minutes. Riders can transfer to the No. 2 and 5 trains at each end of the bus line, as well as the Bx12 SBS on Fordham Road. SBS allows riders to pay for a fare at a bus stop before boarding.
"This new service will not only make travel easier and faster in the Bronx -- it's also central to our larger efforts to bring new life and economic strength to Webster Avenue," Bloomberg said in a statement.
The five-mile SBS on Webster Avenue, which replaces the Bx41 limited service, includes repavement, a new red bus-only lane, traffic improvements and new street medians and pedestrian areas.
"Lined with commercial and residential neighborhoods and flanked by busy hubs, Webster Avenue makes incredible transit demands but the supply hasn't always kept pace," said city Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan in a statement.
