Man charged in death of gay man at Queens motel
A 23-year-old man was charged Thursday with killing his gay lover at a Queens motel last weekend, police said.
Lleuyel Garcia, of Manhattan, was charged with murder in the death of Joseph Benzinger, 54, at the Crown Motor Inn on Feb. 9, according to the NYPD. He was also charged with robbery, criminal possession of stolen property and tampering with evidence.
The two men allegedly had a sexual relationship, and Garcia reportedly implicated himself by saying he was at the motel when Benzinger died, according to published reports.
Benzinger, who was found strangled with a shirt around his neck, is the third gay man slain in the last few weeks. Officials said they don't think the deaths are related.
Earlier this week, City Councilman Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights) advised gay men to be careful when going on dates, especially with men they meet online.
