Man facing slay rap apologizes during perp walk from precinct
A teary Bensonhurst man accused of killing his girlfriend and leaving her body in the bathtub apologized and said he loved her as he was escorted from a police station Wednesday.
“I’m sorry. I loved Daniella. I’m sorry to her family. I’m sorry for my children,” said Brian Sohtz, 36, a transit dispatcher and father of four, according to the Daily News. Sohtz was arraigned on second-degree murder charges Wednesday.
The victim, Daniella Mannino, 34, is the daughter of Joseph Mannino, the director of office services for the Brooklyn district attorney, and the mother of a 13-year-old girl.
Police found Mannino dead Tuesday night at Sohtz’s home at 1865 65th St. Sohtz had allegedly fled the scene and reportedly called his ex-wife to tell her he had “probably” killed Mannino after stabbing her repeatedly during an argument. The ex-wife then alerted authorities.
Sohtz had pleaded guilty five years ago to menacing and possession of a weapon for attacking his ex-wife, the New York Post reported.
The Brooklyn district attorney’s office will seek to have a special prosecutor appointed to try the case, given that the victim’s father worked in the office.
“Our prayers are with the Mannino family,” said Jerry Schmetterer, a spokesman for Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes.
