Mayor donates $50 million to help curb unwanted pregnancies
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is opening up his checkbook to provide better health care to for women in Third World countries.
The mayor announced Wednesday that his charity wing donated $50 million to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's global family planning initiative.
There are 75 million unwanted pregnancies in the world and those births have led to serious health problems for young mothers and their children, according to Bloomberg.
The mayor said the money would be used to help provide affordable contraceptives, information and services. The mayor said the initiative aims to save 200,000 lives.
"I think this work underscores for us how truly important integrating family planning services with obstetric care is," he said in a YouTube video released Wednesday.
