Mets' winning steak has fans dreaming of postseason success
The Mets are the kings of New York baseball ... at least for another day.Gotham’s longtime underdog had a reason to howl with pride Wednesday, trouncing the Dodgers in an afternoon game to ensure a second day atop their division and completing a 9-1 homestand, the Mets’ best 10-game showing in Queens since 1988. “Just keep winning, keep winning,” longtime fan Bob Jackson, 65, encouraged his team. The Woodhaven resident said more victories like Wednesday’s 7-3 win could defy the Mets’ reputation as late-season disappointments. The Mets’ back-to-back sweeps of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves already have some fans dreaming of a postseason. “We’re going to the playoffs,” said Fernando Ramos, 18, a Newark, N.J., native in town for Wednesday’s game. The Amazins’ victory run coincide with their crosstown rivals’ recent poor outings. The Yankees had lost four out of five of their games entering last night, with the Mets having just as many wins — if not more — than the Bronx Bombers. Wednesday, Yankee fans scoffed at the Mets’ recent successes. “Every time the Mets go into the playoffs, they choke,” said Harry Morales, 41, of Park Slope. But the Mets faithful was not to be deterred. Chris Mangan, 25, of Astoria, said, “They could really turn the corner and not look back."
