  • Mets, Yankees on mend entering Subway Series

    Entering the weekend Subway Series, there are the stars and then there are the star-crossed.

    When the Mets and Yankees renew their rivalry with a three-game set starting Friday at Citi Field, the missing big names will be as notable as those on the field, starting with Derek Jeter.

    After his morning workout on Wednesday in Tampa, Jeter — sidelined since June 13 and stuck at 2,994 career hits — said he expects at least another day of the drills before any kind of decision on a potential minor-league cameo.

    Here are some other notables who are questionable or worse to play this weekend:

    Yankees

    Strained right calf (15-day DL)
    Due back: early July
    Notes: Ran bases, took part in batting practice on Wednesday, likely needs one rehab start

    RHP Bartolo Colon
    Strained left hamstring (15-day DL)
    Due back: early July
    Notes: Threw 60-pitch simulated game on Monday

    LHP Pedro Feliciano
    Torn left rotator cuff (15-day DL)
    Due back: late July
    Notes: Threw 15 times off bullpen mound Monday

    RHP Rafael Soriano
    Right elbow inflammation (60-day DL)
    Due back: Possibly July
    Notes: Recently began throwing program in Tampa

    RHP Phil Hughes
    Right shoulder inflammation (60-day DL)
    Due back: Early July
    Notes: Struck out eight during 61⁄3 innings on Wednesday for Double-A Trenton in second rehab start

    INF Eric Chavez
    Bone bruise in foot (60-day DL)
    Due back: Late July
    Notes: Recently began light baseball activities

    3B David Wright
    Stress fracture in lower back (15-day DL)
    Due back: mid-July
    Notes: Set to swing off a tee Thursday, may start rehab stint next week

    LHP Johan Santana
    Torn capsule in left shoulder (60-day DL)
    Due back: possibly August
    Notes: Long-tossing in Port St. Lucie, Fla., close to making second attempt to throw off mound

    LHP Jonathon Niese
    Rapid heartbeat (day-to-day)
    Notes: Passed battery of heart-related tests, may pitch Friday

    1B Ike Davis
    Sprained left ankle (15-day DL)
    Due back: possibly late July
    Notes: June 22 MRI revealed no improvement; season-ending surgery possible

    RHP Taylor Buchholz
    Right shoulder fatigue (15-day DL)
    Due back: possibly July
    Notes: Resting arm at home in Pennsylvania
