Morning routine: Norm Macdonald
Stand-up comic Norm Macdonald — formerly the host of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live” — is back behind the funny-news desk as the star of “Sports Show with Norm Macdonald,” which airs Tuesdays at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.
Q: Do you have a morning routine?
A: I write from 7 o’clock in the morning to 11 o’clock. I write and then I read.
Q: What do you read?
A: Just literature. It helps me to write — I read, like, just great pieces of literature, and it gets my brain sort of hyped up.
Q: What is your typical breakfast?
A: Egg whites. Now I’m eating good, so it’s completely different — let me tell you my typical breakfast, because this is only the last three days that I’ve eaten egg whites.
Q: What did you eat?
A: My typical breakfast is a whole bunch of banana pancakes. There’s this pancake place right near my apartment, so I get about six of these banana pancakes and I literally put on a half a bottle of syrup and I eat them all. And then I feel like I’m going to die. I don’t even know why I do it.
Q: What was your breakfast like growing up in Canada?
A: I grew up with my mom’s breakfast, which was real bacon. She fills the pan with bacon, and then she takes the bacon out and she puts the eggs into the bacon [pan]. Now there’s about an inch and a half of bacon grease. So then she cooks the eggs, and they’re all black. But they’re so delicious. And they’re all slippery — you can hardly even get your fork on them, they keep slipping around. I have such bad eating habits from my parents. It’s f------ crazy.
Q: Where do you go to eat in the city?
A: The diners here are awesome. I like diner food the best of anything. I don’t like fancy food and s---. I just love bacon and eggs — the two most unhealthy things in the world.
