"Chico & Rita" is an evocative tribute to mid-century, pre-revolution Havana and the jazz music that flourished there (and in New York).

The animated film depicts an eloquent love story between pianist Chico and singer Rita, aided by an exceptional soundtrack.

The hand-drawn, watercolor-style animation is a natural fit for the story, with its retro sensibility and timeless effect. It's no surprise that the movie is among the five nominees for Best Animated Feature at this year's Oscars.

Playing at the Angelika Film Center.
