In Japanese with English subtitlesThe great Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami finds his way to Japan in "Like Someone In Love," a meticulously constructed depiction of modern alienation.
Had Sofia Coppola not claimed it with her own Japan-set drama, "Lost in Translation" would have been a fitting title for this story of the quiet grandfatherly bond that develops between a lonely young prostitute (Rin Takanashi) and the widower (Tadashi Okuno) who hires her.
This is a still movie, structured around extended silences and scenes of characters observing life passing by outside the windows of their cars and apartments, rather than fully living it themselves.
Kiarostami punctures the meditative bubble with dialogue that gets to the heart of what it means to truly, unconditionally love someone. His work requires patience to absorb, but it has ample rewards.
