Nets, Knicks opener at Barclays Center postponed

The Brooklyn Nets' season-opening game against the Knicks on Thursday night at the new Barclays Center has been postponed because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Wednesday afternoon.
The lack of mass transit available to the area was the main reason for the postponement.
Nets general manager Billy King had confirmed the news about an hour prior to Bloomberg's announcement during his press briefing about the damage and recovery from the superstorm.
No make-up date for this game has been announced yet.
Nets vs. Knicks was to be the first basketball game played at the team's new $1 billion arena.
"At my recommendation the NBA has canceled tomorrow night's Nets-Knicks game," Bloomberg said. "I'm sorry about the game."
The Nets will now open their new arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the Toronto Raptors. Bloomberg said the NBA is working with the City to provide bus transportation to the arena for Saturday's game.
The Barclays Center is heavily dependent on mass transit, with 11 subway lines and an LIRR stop nearby.
Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald got the word from the NBA that tomorrow's game in Brooklyn is off and Friday's game against the Heat is on -- as of now.
