New cops to hit NYC streets on New Year's Eve

A cavalry of rookies will descend on Times Square New Year’s Eve as part of the city’s efforts to keep Gotham safe during the holiday, top cop Ray Kelly announced Thursday.
The addition of the 1,200 freshly minted cops is among precautions the city is taking, though Kelly declined to elaborate. Despite talk of a national al-Qaida threat, Kelly said the city is not facing a specific threat this holiday season.
Concerns about city security were heightened Thursday after bombings rocked two embassies in Rome.
“We’ve been attacked twice successfully and [there’ve been] 11 plots against the city since 2001, so obviously we have to be on our guard and we are,” Kelly told reporters after a police promotions ceremony at One Police Plaza.
U.S. officials have said al-Qaida was planning an attack against the United States during the holidays and urged Americans to be vigilant, but details on a possible plot were scant.
New Yorkers and tourists shouldn’t be concerned, Kelly added.
“All indications are that it will be a safe and happy holiday,” he said.
