Times Square isn’t the only place that throws a hopping New Year’s Eve party. And even though traditions vary across the globe, the highlight of most major celebrations is still a good old-fashioned fireworks extravaganza.
Las Vegas
The Vegas Strip turns into one major party for about 500,000 people. Fireworks are launched from seven casino rooftops. London
At midnight, Big Ben chimes 12 times before a fireworks show begins at the London Eye, the city’s iconic Ferris wheel. Paris
Thousands of visitors line the famed Champs-Elysees for “la Saint-Sylvestre,” watching fireworks near the Eiffel Tower and drinking from their Champagne flutes. Berlin
More than a million people meet at the Brandenburg Gate, which offers concerts, party tents and a fireworks display. Edinburgh, Scotland
The Scots’ celebration of “Hogmanay” is a four-day event. It begins Thursday with a torchlight procession, includes street festivals and culminates with fireworks. Moscow
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev delivers a traditional televised speech five minutes before midnight. After the fireworks show in Red Square, Russians file into bars and nightclubs. Beijing
The Chinese New Year’s celebration lasts about a month. Residents hold extravagant carnivals, fireworks shows and parties to ring in the Gregorian New Year and continue to celebrate until the start of the Chinese New Year, Feb. 3. Tokyo

About 1.5 million people gather to watch two fireworks shows over Sydney Harbor. The first, for families, begins at 9 p.m. The second — one of the world’s largest displays — starts at midnight. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The beaches of Copacabana include live music and a fireworks show. Rio also will unveil its logo for the 2016 Olympics. Mexico City
People gather at the Zocalo, Mexico City’s main square, for a huge street festival and fireworks display. Mexicans eat 12 grapes at midnight, making a wish for the new year with each one.
