Newt Gingrich Tuesday called on President Barack Obama to apologize for a joke that actor Robert De Niro made at a New York fundraiser for the president on Monday night hosted by Michelle Obama.

According to published reports, De Niro listed the wives of the GOP candidates, then asked the star-studded crowd: "Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" He added: "Too soon, right?"

Gingrich slammed De Niro's remarks, saying the "country is ready for a new first lady, and he doesn't have to describe it in racial terms."

He said Obama should be held accountable "when someone at his event says something as utterly and totally unacceptable as Robert De Niro said last night."

A spokeswoman for Michelle Obama said the joke was "inappropriate."
