No summonses were handed out for violating the new smoking ban in parks, plazas and other public spaces that began Monday, the parks department said Tuesday.
The department said that it’s up to people to enforce the ban themselves, although a parks enforcement officer can slap a smoking scofflaw with a $50 fine.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg added Tuesday that “public pressure” will help ensure people don’t light up, but acknowledged that not everyone will follow it.
