NYC landlords face new bedbug rules
Landlords must do a better job at evicting bedbugs from their buildings after the city released new enforcement rules Tuesday.
The guidelines require landlords to inspect and treat any apartment – as well as those surrounding it – found to be harboring the blood-sucking bugs. They must also inform all tenants when bedbugs are discovered and release a plan of action to exterminate them.
Landlords who fail to comply can be issued citations or face housing court.
"Beginning with the dedicated efforts of the Bed Bug Advisory Board, today’s protocols announcement and launch of the Bed Bug Portal establishes another benchmark in the city’s commitment to getting the bed bug epidemic under control, and providing effective help when they strike," said Councilwoman Gale Brewer (D-Upper West Side).
