A police sergeant from Long Island was praised by NYPD chief Ray Kelly as "the face of the NYPD on the national stage" after she was found dead Tuesday, the apparent victim of a suicide.

Stephanie Moses, 40, an 18-year veteran and member of NYPD's ceremonial unit, represented the force at public events and stood with high-profile leaders, including President Barack Obama last year at a World Trade Center site ceremony.

Police Commissioner Kelly said Moses had "epitomized professionalism" on the force. "She appears to have taken her own life," Kelly said in answering reporters' questions. "We are trying to get to the bottom of it. Everybody is disturbed by what happened."
