Pols to submit bill to make 'rescue dog' state's official dog
It’ll be all about Fido and Fifi at City Hall today, as state legislators will cross party lines to introduce bills that would give the state its first official canine-in-chief and first-feline.
Assemblyman Micah Kellner (D-Upper East Side) and State Sen. Joseph Robach (R-Rochester) will submit legislation awarding the honorary title to the “rescue dog” — that is, a shelter pooch — to encourage adoption, according to The New York Times. Meanwhile, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Upper West Side) will propose making the “rescue cat” the state’s kitty.
About a dozen other states already have officials dogs, including Pennsylvania with its Great Dane and Virginia with its American foxhound.
If approved the new dog and cat could join other state critters, including the ladybug (official insect) and the beaver (official animal).
Earlier this month, state pols disagreed over what should be our state vegetable — onions or sweet corn. That battle still wages on.
