Rebecca Hall coming to Broadway in 'Machinal'
Rebecca Hall (“Iron Man 3”) will make her Broadway debut next season in a revival of Sophie Treadwell’s rarely seen, once incendiary 1928 drama “Machinal,” in which she will play a lonely wife and mother who becomes involved in an affair and eventually with murder.
Rock-star rabbi musical coming to Broadway
“Soul Doctor: The Journey of a Rock-Star Rabbi,” a new musical about the life of the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, will open at Broadway’s Circle in the Square in August. Carlebach, who wrote countless pop songs starting in the 1950s, performed with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Bob Dylan.
Tonys pick ‘Christmas’ over ‘Drood’ to perform
Although “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” received a handful of Tony nominations, including one for Best Musical Revival, it looks as if the cast will not reunite to perform at the Tony Awards. Stephanie J. Block, who was nominated for her performance as Drood, tweeted, “We want to. It’s just not in the cards this year.” On the other hand, the cast of “A Christmas Story,” which was nominated for Best Musical, will reunite to perform on the awards show.
Broadway attendance sank 6% this season
Not only did fewer people attend Broadway shows during the recent season, the total grosses earned by Broadway shows decreased for the first time in four years. Attendance went down by 6% and the total gross earned ($1.14 billion) went down about a half-million dollars compared with the previous season. In a statement, Charlotte St. Martin, director of the Broadway League, blamed the losses mainly on Superstorm Sandy.
Angelson leaves ‘Vanya’ without explanation
Genevieve Angelson, who played Nina in “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” on Broadway, has left the show under mysterious circumstances. According to a show spokesman, Angelson
