Again, the Jets are making headlines off the field.
Jets star quarterback Mark Sanchez is being tackled by a report on a sports blog that he had a relationship with a 17-year-old high school girl.
Deadspin.com reported Friday that it has proof that Sanchez, 24, was involved with the female, known only as “E.K.,” and that it will publish details — and alleged photos she took of his bedroom — Tuesday.
Any alleged relationship would be legal if it took place in New York or New Jersey, as the ages of consent are 17 and 16, respectively.
The website said E.K. contacted it and agreed to cooperate with the story. But she’s since reversed and has hired an attorney, who threatened legal action if Deadspin publishes the alleged details.
“Such allegations are entirely false,” her attorney, Richard Kendall, wrote in a letter to Deadspin. “E.K. has not engaged in any improper conduct … our client has repeatedly informed you and others, there simply is no story here.”
Deadspin editor AJ Daulerio told amNewYork the letter won't affect his decision to publish the story.
The team has drawn a ton of controversy this season. Sideline reporter Ines Sainz claimed she was harassed in the locker room in September; receiver Braylon Edwards was arrested with a DWI charge also in September; and, most recently, coach Rex Ryan’s alleged foot-fetish videos with his wife grabbed headlines for weeks.
In a statement, the Jets said: “We are not going to discuss Mark’s private life.”
While at USC in 2006, Sanchez faced allegations of sexual assault, but he was never charged and officials dropped the investigation because of a lack of evidence.
Neither Sanchez’s rep nor Kendall returned calls for comment.
