  • Rewind: 'Captain America': Epic action at its finest

    amNY -- Captain America

Captain America: The First Avenger,” the theatrical debut of Marvel Comics’ star-spangled hero, was perhaps the most fun film to hit movie theaters this past summer and my favorite Marvel adaptation to hit the big screen. The movie follows Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) from being a scrawny, wannabe military man (and New Yorker!) through his transformation to the beefy World War II super-soldier. Director Joe Johnson has crafted an energetic, intense and unstoppable war film, and Evans is perfectly cast as Cap, while his evil Nazi foil, the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) is a suitable villain, menacing and creepy. (DVD, $29.99; DVD/Blu-ray combo, $42.99; Blu-ray 3-D/Blu-ray/DVD combo, $54.99)

    Classic sitcom

    ‘Barney Miller: The Complete Series’
Likely completely unknown by anyone under the age of 25, this long-running Hal Linden sitcom about a New York City police precinct in Greenwich Village, which ran from 1974-82, is a classic piece of television comedy and a must-see for any New Yorker. (DVD, $159.99)

    Spy Thriller

    ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’
Alec Guinness stars in this much-celebrated adaptation of the classic John le Carré thriller about a spy, George Smiley, who is called in to uncover a Russian agent in the British secret service. (DVD, $49.99)

    Avengers assemble!

‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,’ Volumes 3 and 4
While you’re waiting for Joss Whedon’s “Avengers” movie, check out some more episodes of this wonderful superhero cartoon. (DVD, $19.99 each)

    Oh, bother

    ‘Winnie the Pooh’
Disney’s unbelievably charming movie — and a really short one at a mere 63 minutes — has the Pooh bear and his friends in the Hundred Acre Forest looking for a new tail for Eeyore and then trying to save Christopher Robin from a mythic beast known as the Backson. (DVD, $29.99; Blu-ray/DVD combo, $44.99)

    Life finds a way

    ‘Jurassic Park: Ultimate Trilogy’
You’re getting one of my favorite thriller movies (the classic dino adventure), its first mediocre sequel (“The Lost World”) and its underrated second sequel (“JP3”). But you can always skip “The Lost World” and just check out the extras, including a three-part making-of doc. (DVD, $49.98; Blu-ray, $79.98; Ultimate Trilogy Gift Set, $119.98)

    See it here first

    ‘Robot Chicken: Season 5’
As the sticker on the cover of the packaging professes: This set of the Adult Swim series was “Never on TV. Yet.” It also has seven deleted scenes and commentaries on all 20 episodes of this set. (DVD, $29.98; Blu-ray, $39.99)

    Itchy and scratchy?

‘Tom & Jerry Golden Collection: Volume 1’
Check out 37 remastered theatrical cartoon shorts featuring the cat and mouse. (DVD, $26.98; Blu-ray, $34.99)

    No holds barred

‘WWE: Greatest Rivalries — Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart’
From their tag-team battles between the Rockers and the Hart Foundation to their legendary Iron Man Match, this set captures the intertwined careers of two of the WWE’s most popular grapplers. (DVD, $29.93; Blu-ray, $39.95)

    Must-see TV

    ‘Luther: Season 2’
Idris Elba (“The Wire”) returns for the second season of this BBC crime procedural. (DVD, $34.98)

    Han shot first!

    ‘The People vs. George Lucas’
“Star Wars” creator George Lucas gave birth to one of the most beloved film franchises — and one of the most heavily criticized as well. This witty documentary takes a look at the enigmatic creative force and his film’s rabid fan base. (And again, George: Han shot first!) (DVD, $27.98)
