Sounds of the Five Boro bike tour
When the 32,000 bicyclists take to the streets for the TD Bank Five Boro Tour this Sunday, they will enjoy not only a ride through the boroughs, but also a sampling of local music.
"We selected performers that we felt were fun and lively and really represented New York City," said Jacquelyn Lewis of Bike New York, the organization that plans the annual event.
From a teen gospel choir in Harlem to drumming and dancing in the Bronx, the Five Boro soundtrack represents the neighborhoods of the city along the 42-mile route.
Battery Park: Riders will head uptown humming hair-band ballads from the Broadway musical Rock of Ages. The show's cast will kick off the tour with 1980s hits like "We Built this City" by Jefferson Starship and "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon.
125th Street in Harlem: The Gospel for Teens Choir will be lifting their voices in Harlem on Sunday morning. The choir, directed by Vy Higginsen of the Mama Foundation for the Arts, will be singing gospel songs that have been passed down for generations.
The Bronx: BombaYo, another group of teens, will represent the Bronx with drumming, dancing and singing. A modern take on a 300-year-old Afro-Puerto Rican tradition, BombaYo will take the stage at the Bronx water station, so riders can refuel and dance to the beats.
Long Island City: The Ebony Hillbillies, right, bring a bit of bluegrass and rockabilly to the tour. From the banjo to the washboard, this five-piece string band will be rocking it at the rest area in Queens, where riders can enjoy the view and gear up for the second half of the tour.
Brooklyn Bridge: Once riders reach the Brooklyn Bridge, they'll be greeted by tubas, trombones and tambourines courtesy of The Hungry March Band. The sounds of New Orleans jazz and European brass traditions will lend some pep to cyclists as they cruise on to mile 30.
Staten Island: Before catching the ferry back to Manhattan, cyclists can enjoy the Meetles, a Beatles tribute band, at the Festival at the end of the Five Boro Bike Tour.
