State Education Commissioner David Steiner is set to meet with a nine-person advisory panel today to discuss whether to approve a waiver for New York City Schools Chancellor nominee, Dennis Walcott.

Walcott, 59, was Mayor Michael Bloomberg's pick to head the city's public schools after publishing exec Cathie Black was ousted from the job. Walcott needs the waiver because he lacks a superintendent's license.

In his waiver request, Bloomberg wrote that Walcott "has vast experience in and a deep understanding of the complex issues that face the chancellor."

It's unclear when the state panel will make a final decision.
