  • Sundance Film Festival: 'Please Give'

From the consistently thoughtful director Nicole Nicole Holofcener, “Please Give” transforms the plight of an unusual couple into a narrative that conveys a broad range of recognizable emotions and experiences. Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt star as a Fifth Avenue-based husband and wife who run a West Village antique store, stocked with items purchased cheaply from the grieving children of the recently deceased and sold at marked up prices. The plot, however, is less important than the uniformly terrific performances (Amanda Peet, Rebecca Hall and others round out the cast) and the evocation of a particular, potent mood spurred by guilt, unease and misplaced priorities.
