Tasty cocktails to get you in the Halloween spirit
On Halloween, you don’t have to rely on trick-or-treat candy to catch a buzz. Instead, try these cocktails, courtesy of New York City mixologists.
Jack-o-Lantern Punch, by Phil Ward of MayahuelIngredients:
2 oz. dark rum (Preferably Flor De Caña 7-year Grand Reserve, or Bacardi Gold)
2 oz. apple juice
3 oz. club soda
1 oz. lemon juice
4 sugar cubes
2 whole cloves
1 pinch of fresh nutmeg Dissolve the sugar cubes in 1 oz. of club soda. Muddle the cloves with the dissolved sugar cubes. Add the rest of the ingredients one at a time and stir. Add ice once all of the ingredients and stir the punch until chilled. Strain punch into a glass, punch bowl, or carved out pumpkin, depending on the portion size (this recipe makes 1 serving). Top with 2 oz. club soda; garnish with apple slices, and cinnamon sticks.
Midnight Owl, by Adam Schuman of Fatty Crab
1.5 oz. dried pear and apple infused gin* (preferably Bombay Sapphire or Plymouth)Shake top five ingredients well. Strain into a highball glass. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with cinnamon stick and lemon peel.
1.5 oz. apple cider
.5 oz. absinthe (preferably Lucid or Kubler)
.5 oz simple syrup
.5 oz fresh lemon juice
* To infuse the gin, put a cup of dried pear and apple slices in the bottle, and let it steep for two hours.
Candy Apple, by Jonathan Pogash of Library Bar 1 1/2 oz. berry flavored liqueur (Preferably Veev Acai spirit or Pama)
1 oz. apple cider
1/2 oz. apple liqueur
1/4 oz. simple syrup Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake very well. Strain over ice into an old-fashioned glass.
Garnish with a caramel covered apple slice.
