Thank-you note from parents of injured girl
The parents of the British tourist whose foot was severed by a taxi earlier this week issued a statement Thursday thanking New Yorkers who helped their daughter. Meanwhile, the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers rose to the defense of the driver involved.
“There are not enough words to express our gratitude to everyone who has helped our family during this difficult time,” said Jason and Sonia Green, who flew over from Leicester, England, on Wednesday.
The Greens singled out celebrity doctor Dr. Mehmet Oz; plumber David Justino, who applied a tourniquet to the leg of their daughter, Sian, at the scene of the accident; the staff at Bellevue Hospital Center, the NYPD, and others. The couple professed gratitude to “all the people of New York City and beyond.”
While reattaching Green’s left foot was not possible, her mangled right leg has been treated and will probably “regain most functionality,” said trauma surgeon Dr. Spiros G. Frangos in a statement issued by Bellevue.
On Wednesday, the Taxi and Limousine Commission sent the cabdriver, Mohammed Himon, 24, a summons charging him with violating commission rules and informing him that it intends to revoke his license for 30 days, subject to a hearing.
The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers said it plans a news conference Friday to announce establishment of a fund to raise money for Green, and to request that the TLC deal mercifully with Himon, spokesman Fernando Mateo said.
