A bunch of knuckleheads picked the wrong car to rob.

An off-duty FBI agent busted three men as they broke into his car early Wednesday morning, law enforcement sources said, shooting one of them as they ran away.

The unidentified agent from South Ozone Park and his wife called police at around 5:15 a.m., officials said, reporting that his car's stereo had been swiped.

When police arrived at the scene, the man -- who sources said works in the FBI's New York field office -- told them he thought he had shot one of the men in the back.

Cops found a man fitting the agent's description at Brookdale Hospital and took him into custody. He was in stable condition Wednesday night, police said.

FBI spokesman Peter Donald confirmed there was an incident involving an agent and said "a thorough and comprehensive investigation is under way by the FBI."
