    Forget the bodega roses and cheesy Hallmark card. If you really want to wow your loved one this Valentine's Day, we suggest a few days away.

    Here are six options for every type of getaway. Go for the big day itself (which falls on a Thursday) or anytime in February (when prices typically go down, but romance levels remain pretty stable).

    ACTIVE GETAWAY:

    At this 259-room mountaintop resort guests can take guided hikes, nature walks, swim in an indoor pool, ice skate, snow-shoe, snow-tube and cross-country ski (weather permitting). There's also plenty for those who just want to relax (like a full spa and mineral pool).

    For Valentine's Day, the hotel offers turndown service with chocolate-covered strawberries, a romantic dinner and lots of complimentary activities. Rates begin at $355 per couple per night (tax extra).

    CONNECTICUT SHORE GETAWAY:

    The Connecticut shore is charming year-round. The "Love Is in the Air" package - available all month - includes a two-night stay with breakfast, a $70 gift certificate for dinner at a local restaurant, a bottle of Champagne and homemade cookies. Guests also get a choice of two one-hour massages or one sleigh ride, assuming there's snow. Prices range from $550 to $805, including tax.

    Set in Boston's tony Beacon Hill neighborhood, this luxury boutique hotel is offering a "Romance on the Hill" package, which includes a bottle of Champagne, a special rose-petal turndown service, chocolate-covered strawberries and a late checkout of 2 p.m. Couples can also speak arrange an in-room couples massage (if they book a studio room). Rates start at $495, and the package is available until April 30.

    SPA GETAWAY:

    On the banks of the Hudson River, this hotel's spa specializes in body treatments using organic materials, many sourced on site. On Feb. 13 and 14, starting at $330 per night, guests can stay in a room with a working fireplace and be treated to Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, a $50 Valentine gift card and more. Use of the indoor pool, steam room, sauna and fitness center is included. Can't make it on Valentine's Day? The "Spark and Spa" package includes the same accommodations for one night, a welcome bottle of wine and $50 in spa credits starting at $295 for two.

The Inn's Farmhouse Restaurant will be the setting for a Valentine's Day dinner ($95 per person), which includes four courses, one of which is a truffle course! Weekend rates start at $395 per night, and include breakfast and a complimentary yoga class.

    Available anytime, but perfect for Valentine's Day, the wine-tasting package includes a stretch limo ride to three wineries and a vodka distillery, two dinners and two homemade breakfasts. Guests can also add a one-hour massage for $80 per person. Price is $295 per person, room included. Rent the Summer Suite for two nights, and for $950, get a winery tour, massage and Champagne and flowers. A smaller room is $750.

    This Finger Lakes inn offers several romantic packages all year long, but in February, they're offering the "Love of My Life February Special," ($405 added to a two-night stay), which features a dozen roses; candlelight, rose-petal and chocolate turndown service; in-room breakfast and couples massage and a 10% discount off your room rate. The "10 Ways to Say I Love You February Special" ($939 extra) is even more decadent, with a dozen roses, massage, en-suite picnic dinner and dessert delivered to your room and a six-hour winery/sightseeing tour, plus 10% savings on two nights in any suite. There are three different three-room suites, with rates starting at $200 for midweek and going up to $285 on weekends.
