  • Win for Bloomberg in teacher firing rules

    amny

Legislation that would reform seniority rules for teachers passed 33-27 in the State Senate yesterday.

While it brings Mayor Michael Bloomberg a step closer to laying off city teachers based on merit, the Assembly doesn’t plan to vote on its version of the bill because it’s looking at a different teacher evaluation process that would end seniority rules. The governor also introduced an evaluation proposal of his own last night.

Bloomberg is proposing cutting 6,100 teaching positions under next fiscal year’s budget.
