Tens of thousands of Verizon workers will return to work Monday night without a new contract after striking for two weeks.

The unions representing the 45,000 workers from Virginia to New England reached a deal to return to work while they negotiate a new contract.

The two sides said they are still bargaining over benefits, health care, job security and work rules.

Jim Spellane, spokesman for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, called Verizon’s new contract offer “extreme.” Verizon spokesman Rich Young said the old contract was “outdated.”

Both said they hoped to begin negotiating later this week.
