Ali vs. Holmes on '30 for 30'

Next up in ESPN's "30 for 30" series:

"Muhammad and Larry," directed by famed documentarian Albert Maysles, premiering at 8 p.m. Tuesday. (No Yankees game that night!)

The film examines the Oct. 2, 1980 fight between Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes, mixing new interviews with previously unseen footage Maysles and his late brother, David, shot in the days leading up to the bout.

The interviews are fine, but the footage of Ali in training are what make this worth watching.

Ali looks old and soft, and there already are signs of the deterioration to come in his speech and movements.

I got so caught in the hype for this fight I drove from Ithaca to Syracuse the night before my 20th birthday to watch it on closed circuit at the Syracuse War Memorial.

Then I wrote a column for the college newspaper about the experience.

Spoiler alert: It did not go well for Ali.
