Be thankful for 'Odd Couple'
Happy Thanksgiving, citizens of cyberspace!
This is my 26th consecutive year working on Thanksgiving for Newsday, a responsibility I take on willingly to serve readers and to secure big holiday bucks.
I've had some odd T-Day moments in the past, none more so than last year, when I awoke to an MLB.com report that Bob Sheppard had retired as the Yankees' p.a. man.
So I called the 99-year-old Sheppard at his Baldwin home on Thanksgiving morning to ask him about it.
He refused to use the word "retired" but he confirmed that not many 99-year-olds take two years off from work and return from the layoff. (It was the first time he ever had admitted to his age on the record, but the Pulitzer people never did call me about that.)
Mr. Sheppard did not return, of course, and died this past summer. RIP, sir. I'll be thinking of you this Thanksgiving.
Speaking of which: Other than the NFL tripleheader, the TV experience I most recommend this holiday is at 1:30 p.m. during WPIX's "Odd Couple" marathon.
A clip appears above. Enjoy!
