Botta welcome in Coliseum - as a fan
Here is a news story I wrote about Charles Wang's appearance on Gary Bettman's Sirius XM Satellite Radio show Thursday.
There was a lot of interesting stuff I couldn't fit in the newspaper, including GM Garth Snow talking about hockey stuff and about how the Nassau Coliseum makes it more difficult to sign free agents.
(He compared recent improvements in the team facilities to putting lipstick on a pig.)
Here is the complete podcast of the nearly hour-long session.
The commissioner (Cornell Class of '74) actually did a pretty good job of asking some blunt questions - although he wasn't always so great on the followups.
He even asked Wang and Snow about the departure of popular TV analyst Billy Jaffe and the revoking of the media credentials of Chris Botta, a former team executive and now a widely read blogger.
Wang and Snow didn't address the Botta situation after Bettman asked, but later a fan posed the question again in the show's final 30 seconds.
Here is Snow's response, which lost me toward the end:
"It's always a difficult situation when you have a former employee who worked 20-plus years with an organization, and in virtually any other company or business that terminated an employee he would be escorted off the premises.
"Well, we funded his blog for a year-and-a-half, and at that point, after a year-and-a-half of funding a blog, we still welcome him into the building. He can come and sit in the stands and the more hockey fans the better."
