  • Dave Winfield joins ESPN as 'Baseball Tonight' analyst

Speaking of Hall of Fame former Yankees outfielders (see post below) . . .

ESPN will announce later this Tuesday that Dave Winfield has joined the network as a "Baseball Tonight" analyst, working mainly Sundays and some Mondays.

Winfield will appear this Sunday night before ESPN's Braves-Phillies opener.

By the way, Winfield has one of the coolest birthday-claims-to-fame in sports: He's a baseball Hall of Famer who was born on the very day Bobby Thomson's home run beat the Dodgers in the NL playoffs in the most famous play in baseball history.

I spoke to Winfield about this when he was the guest speaker at the 1984 Alaska Sportsperson of the Year banquet in Anchorage. (I was born on his 9th birthday.)

    But I digress . . .
