  • 'Empty Nest' edges out Michael Phelps at touch pad!

The NBC public relations staff is getting a little giddy about the network's Olympics success; its ratings news releases are getting funkier by the day.

Take this gem: The average of 31.1 million people who watched Saturday night's prime time telecast were the most for a Saturday show on NBC since 1990, when 31.4 million tuned in for the Feb. 24 episode of "Empty Nest."

(By the time Phelps was winning his eighth gold medal in Beijing, the audience crested at 39.9 million.)

I had quite a thing for Kristy McNichol back in the day. I never met her, but I did have dinner with Richard Mulligan in 1974 after he performed in the play "Thieves," with Marlo Thomas, whose hair used to be done by my aunt.

But I digress. Have a nice day. Enjoy "Mike and . . . No One Yet" after the Mets game.
