ESPN adds Boston to its lineup of city-specific sites
ESPN was so pleased with its ESPNChicago.com that it announced it will add versions for Dallas later this year and New York and Los Angeles in 2010.
Executives discussed the expansion to those three markets over lunch Thursday at the network's media workshop in Bristol.
Then out of the blue last night came word that ESPNBoston.com would launch Sept. 14.
All of this naturally is of concern to locally-based media outlets, what with ESPN's long march toward world domination.
But for now I believe the threat is minimal, especially in New York.
ESPN will operate these Web sites in conjunction with its radio affiliates and is not yet willing or able to try to match, say, Newsday's coverage of local pro, college and high school teams blow for blow.
