  • ESPN Radio mutes Pittsburgh yakker for Ted joke

Thanks to our friends at The Big Lead for tipping us off to this story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about the firing of controversial radio yakker Mark Madden.

The wrinkle is that station GM Mike Thompson - formerly the program director at 1050 ESPN in New York - initially was inclined to keep Madden on the air despite his unfortunate remarks about Sen. Ted Kennedy.

But word came from headquarters in Bristol that Madden had to go.

There are pros and cons to being part of the ESPN Radio family.

You get to have a lot of big-name guests on to talk about stuff, but you also have to answer to a higher authority.

Understandable. McDonald's corporate headquarters wouldn't stand idly by while a local franchise owner besmirched the brand by serving Big Macs tainted by rodent doo-doo, would it?
