Two last things about 2008, then we'll move on to '09 effective Friday morning:

    1. Not surprisingly, the Giants' Super Bowl victory won an online poll of Newsday.com readers to name the favorite back page of 2008, with 39.1 percent of the vote. But for all that occurred in the sports world last year, what finished second? The breakup of "Mike and the Mad Dog," with 12.3 percent.

    2. As I read SI's "Year in Sports 2008" I realized I was remiss in not acknowledging in my year-end roundups the losses of an unusually large number of sports media luminaries last year, from national (Jim McKay) to local (Bobby Murcer, Dick Lynch). Thanks for the memories to those three, as well as others on SI's list: Myron Cope, Charlie Jones, Mary Garber, W.C. Heinz, Skip Caray, Herb Score.
