Francona, Bobby V trade jobs
Two of New England’s most venerable sports institutions, the Red Sox and ESPN, in effect traded two of their most visible stars the past week.
First, Bobby Valentine went from “Sunday Night Baseball’’ to the Red Sox dugout as manager. Then Terry Francona went from the Red Sox dugout to succeeding Valentine at ESPN.
I asked Francona who got the better of the deal. “One thing I do know is I’ll probably sleep better next year than Bobby,’’ he said.
Still, he called it a good trade for both sides.
“This was a very refreshing way to step back,’’ he said. “I’m very excited about this new challenge, as I assume Bobby is excited for his new challenge. It’s probably win-win for everybody. That’s how it should be.’’
