  • Frank Gifford convinced Howard Cosell to announce John Lennon's death

I spoke to Frank Gifford Tuesday about Don Meredith and Vince Lombardi, but I neglected to inquire about the events of Dec. 8, 1980, when Giff played a little-known role in the reporting of John Lennon's death during "Monday Night Football."

Check out this excellent "Outside the Lines" piece, featuring a fascinating off-the-air exchange between Gifford and Cosell in which the former jock convinces the journalist in the booth to report the news.

I was not watching the game that night. I heard about Lennon's death while playing pickup ice hockey at Lynah Rink.

I wrote a story for the Cornell Daily Sun the next day about campus reaction.

    Sigh.
