  • George Steinbrenner waves, Kelly Clarkson sings

Here is Newsday's comprehensive coverage of the first regular-season game at the new big ballpark in the Bronx.

Among the stories is mine about the pregame festivities, quite a multi-tasking feat given I covered it by reading the closed captions on the scoreboard while listening to Dick Ebersol on a conference call about John Madden.

Mostly, it was a pleasant opening ceremony on a pleasant day, with several nice touches. Two strange decisions, though:

Why show George Steinbrenner on the video board at 12:13, when the stadium was less than half full, rather than turning his appearance into a grand finale just before the first pitch?

And why Texan Kelly Clarkson for the National Anthem? Kelly Clarkson? Was there no one with New York roots of some sort able and willing to do the honors?

Even fellow "American Idol" champ Jordin Sparks would have made more sense. At least her father played for the Giants.
