Hockey, hoops and hardball
Three programming notes for fellow old-timers, er, I mean, readers of all ages with an appreciation for sports TV history:
During NBC’s afternoon window Sunday, Al Michaels will host a look back at the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, one day before the 30th anniversary of its upset of the Soviet Union in Lake Placid.
There is no new ground broken in the special, but for those unfamiliar with the story it serves as a useful primer.
For those intimately familiar with it, it is nice to see Michaels join Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig and Mark Johnson sitting in the rink all four of them helped make famous.
At 5 p.m. Monday, MSG will replay the famed Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals – during which Al Trautwig will discuss the event with the star of that game, Walt Frazier.
I’ve been waiting 40 years for this. Last time it was blacked out and I had to listen on the radio.
And Monday at 8:30, MLB Network counts down the best team announcers in baseball history.
Sources say the list includes New York-related entries Vin Scully, Red Barber, Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto. No, you are not allowed to write in Fran Healy.
