'Idol' edges Olympics

"American Idol" bounced back Tuesday night from its head-to-head viewership loss to the Olympics last Wednesday, which ended a 222-episode winning streak against other programming.

During the two hours the shows were matched Tuesday, "Idol" averaged 24.0 million viewers to the Olympics' 20.8 million. (In fairness, most of the women's figure skating, a huge ratings draw, was shown after 10 p.m.)

Said NBC senior VP of marketing Mike McCarley:

"American Idol deserves applause.

"It's an absolute juggernaut that went undefeated for six years and is now 223-1. We are just happy to be the 1."

NBC did cut its deficit relative to "Idol" Tuesday if you compare it to the corresponding night during the 2006 Olympics and to the first Tuesday of the '10 Games.
