  • Islanders fail to ignite Kansas City's little-known hockey mania

It turns out preseason hockey featuring teams from 1,500 miles away in either direction is not a big draw in Kansas City.

Who knew? They LOVED the Scouts in the mid-1970s, right?

This reminds of the time I wrote a story hammering Anchorage hockey fans for a poor turnout for a Winnipeg Jets preseason game in 1983 and the town's hockey boosters were so furious they glared at me en masse the next night while freezing me out in the media lounge.

I think Anchorage was dreaming of an NHL franchise at the time. Or at least a minor league franchise.

I think Dale Hawerchuk had a hat trick.

    But I digress.
