  • Islanders nix Billy Jaffe

MSG did not renew the contract of Islanders analyst Billy Jaffe, ending his four-year term.

The network declined to comment on the reason for the move, saying only, “MSG wishes Billy luck in future endeavors. The network will name a new Islanders TV analyst in the near future.’’

Jaffe declined to comment when reached by phone other than to say, “I’m focused on the future. I had a great four years.’’

While announcers technically are under contract to MSG, the Islanders – like most pro teams – have the right to approve or disapprove of those who call their games.

Three people familiar with the decision said the discontent with Jaffe came from the Islanders and not the network.

    The Islanders declined to comment.

Jaffe generally was popular with fans and won a New York Emmy for best sports analyst in 2008. He joined the Islanders broadcast four years ago after Joe Micheletti moved over to the Rangers booth.

Butch Goring, a studio analyst on Islanders games, figures to be a candidate to replace Jaffe. Another intriguing option is Denis Potvin, who worked Panthers games for 16 years before being let go after the 2008-09 season.
