John Sterling has tested the patience of even his most ardent supporters in recent weeks with a series of increasingly awkward play-by-play mistakes on WCBS – especially on balls hit deep to the outfield.
There is no indication the Yankees won’t stand behind him after this season when his contract, as well as those of WCBS and of Suzyn Waldman, are to expire. The organization is extremely loyal to him.
But even in the best of times Sterling walks a fine line between charmingly quirky and unacceptably inaccurate, and lately he has been on the wrong side of it.
