John McEnroe proud of interview hug of Roger Federer

Here is an item about John McEnroe that I wrote for the Friday column that did not make it into the newspaper:
With the U.S. Open set to begin Monday, tennis still is basking in the glow of last months Wimbledon mens final, instantly dubbed the best match ever by none other than John McEnroe.
I do feel that [buzz], McEnroe said Thursday, noting feedback he has gotten even from casual fans of the sport.
But what about reaction to one of the Rafael Nadal-Roger Federer epics most memorable moments an emotional McEnroe hugging Federer after interviewing him?
I have gotten people in the stands when I play now going, Give me a hug, Mac! he said. Unless its, Hey, theres fiber man! (McEnroe endorses All-Bran.)
It seemed like the right thing to do at the time, and Im happy I did it, because I really felt for him, McEnroe said. Its taken on a life of its own . . . I feel sort of proud of it, anyway.
Added his brother, Patrick: It felt like a brotherly hug. I almost felt taken back to our [childhood] days in Douglaston there.
