Mickey Rourke nominated for Oscar as pro wrestler
Mickey Rourke was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, to the surprise of no one.
If we stretch the definition of sports to include pro wrestling, he could join a small, quirky list of actors who have won the award for depicting jocks.
No. 1 surely is Robert DeNiro for "Raging Bull" in 1980.
Some others (help me out if I've forgotten anyone worthy):
Wallace Beery, "The Champ," 1931-32 (washed up boxer)
Marlon Brando, "On the Waterfront," 1954 (washed up boxer)
Charlton Heston, "Ben-Hur," 1959 (chariot racer)
Paul Newman, "The Color of Money," 1986 (pool shark)
Tom Hanks, "Forrest Gump," 1994 (Alabama kick returner)
Russell Crowe, "Gladiator," 2000 (gladiator)
(UPDATE: Let's not be sexist here. Commenter John H correctly points out Hilary Swank should be on the list for "Million Dollar Baby," 2004.)
