  • MSG Media benefits from Islanders remaining on LI

The main element of my Friday newspaper column concerns the TV ramifications of a potential departure from Long Island by its professional hockey team.

Bottom line: There are good business reasons for the Islanders to stay and collect their generous rights fees from Cablevision / MSG, and there are good business reasons for Cablevision / MSG to want them to stay. (Cablevision owns both MSG and Newsday.)

Two additional things I could have pointed out:

As Rieber notes here, Newsday itself has business reasons to want the Isles to remain.

Also, before Isles fans attack me for this - actually, some already have - I understand many of you believe MSG does not promote Islanders programming with the same fervor it does Rangers stuff.

All I was pointing out in the piece is that from a business perspective, the network has nothing to gain from the Isles leaving the market.

Whew. Pitchers and catchers, where are you?
